Health authorities: COVID-19 is spreading between regions

Health authorities are reminding people that small clusters of COVID-19 in one region of the province can quickly become outbreaks in another, which is why province-wide orders are in place throughout BC.

“The risks are everywhere and no community or person is immune,” said health authorities. “The virus doesn’t recognize community boundaries or regional borders. When transmission increases in one area, we focus our public health efforts to contain the further spread and ask everyone to step up their own efforts and preventive actions at the same time.”

Using layers of protection are how we can best protect each other, they said. This includes washing our hands, wearing a mask when inside close or public spaces, and keeping groups small inside and outside our homes.

Health authorities also announced 335 new cases of the virus today, including seven that are epidemiologically linked, for a total of 16,135.

There are 3,120 active cases, a number that continues to rise every day, and 7,133 people who are under active public health monitoring as a result of identified exposure to known cases.

There remain 92 people hospitalized with COVID-19, but 25 of those people are now in intensive care, an increase of three from yesterday. There was one new virus-related death for a total of 273.

Officials announced three new healthcare facility outbreaks while declaring another is over. In total, 29 longterm care or assisted living facilities and two acute care facilities have active outbreaks.

There was one new community outbreak announced at a resort in Kelowna. The outbreak at Tim Horton’s in Merritt has been declared over. There also continue to be exposure events around the province.
